4 Elements of Writing the Perfect Social Media Bio

December 31, 2017

The importance and value of your social media bio is more critical than you may think. Your brief bio is your first chance to grab the attention of potential clients and customers. It’s that one-time first impression.

As we begin a new year in 2018, this is a good time to refresh your social media and digital brand presence. Whether it’s your short Twitter bio, the ‘About Me’ section of your website, or your LinkedIn summary, take the time to make it shine.

Your brief social media bio is an effective way to hit clients and customers with your personal brand, and encapsulate your message in the online version of your elevator pitch.

The principle behind an elevator pitch is that you summarize your brand, message, and objective in a short and snappy statement. One that makes you memorable or unforgettable after you’ve met that person for the first time.

Apply this same principle to your social media bio so your potential customers feel compelled to find out even more about you. Here are some strategies on how to write a stand-out social media bio.

#1: Keep It Short

Think of your social bio as your advertising billboard and try to fit in as much essential information as possible while still keeping the copy short and sweet.

People’s online attention span is notoriously brief, so make sure you highlight your specialties in two or three sentences. Think of your social media bio like a book title or an article headline.

It has to jump out and captivate potential customers, summarize what you’re all about, and tempt them to learn more about you, or even better, make them want to do business with you. This is where you can begin to build that ever important “know, like, and trust factor.”

#2: Use Keywords

Incorporate a few of your brand or industry keywords into your bio in order to improve search results in search engines like Google and Bing. Including keywords will help your social media profile get discovered and be seen by new eyes.

Remember, people may not know your exact name when they search but are searching for someone “like” you with specific skills or within a certain industry.

If you really want to increase your search engine potential, include hashtags before your keywords. This will attract your target customers through organic search results.

#3: Don’t Be Shy

Your social media bio is your opportunity to present the best version of yourself to the world. With that in mind, don’t be shy about highlighting your accomplishments. Did you write a book? Were you featured as a keynote speaker at a conference? Include your achievements in your bio to differentiate yourself and to stand out from your competition.

#4: Be Yourself

Social media is all about personality and authenticity. The most important thing to remember when writing your bio is to be yourself and highlight who you are and how you help solve a potential client’s problem.

Include a short mention of your hobbies or your family to humanize you and connect with potential customers on a personal level. This is a great opportunity to mention that quirky aspect of your personality, which may resonate with your reader. It’s what makes you, you. Social media and your digital brand is all about the authentic blend of the personal and professional.

If you haven’t bothered to fill out your social media bio, or if you haven’t updated it in a while, now is the perfect time as we kick off 2018! Now, go forth and infuse that bio with your unique personality.
